about

"A Notion" was originally recorded in 2014 during the sessions that would yield the Michael Mull Octet album Source Code. It was omitted from the album to favor of a more concise and focused playlist.

"A Notion" highlights the sentimental and cinematic underpinnings of my music for the Octet. While the full-length 2014 album contains the haunting "The People Who Raised Us" and the emotional crescendo of "The Sparrow Cloud", there is a resolute joy and adventurous narrative to "A Notion" that is unlike any other composition I've written for the group.

The track features Greg Uhlmann on acoustic guitar, weaving in and out of the composed material. A special nod must be given to drummer Mike Lockwood, who masterfully frames the melodic and rhythmic elements of the piece with a beautiful groove.
